Brother Herbert M. Hartlove was elected Junior Deacon of Virginia Research Lodge No. 1777 in 1992, he advanced through the chairs and was serving as Senior Warden in 1995 when he laid down his working tools on April 2nd, falling short of serving as Worshipful Master by a few months.
He served as Worshipful Master of Washington Lafayette Lodge No. 176 in 1984, and Blackwater Lodge No. 134 in 1985 and 1986. He served as District Deputy Grand Master of the 31st Masonic District in 1993.

He also served as secretary of Q.C.C.C. Herbert belonged to Eastern Star No. 78 and Gloria Chapter No. 155. He was a member of Bunker Hill No. 9 and the Confederate Sons of the Civil War.
